The Blessing of the Vines: A Tradition of 15 August in Provence

Le 15 aout en Provence

The 15 August in Provence is not just the Feast of the Assumption. It is also a special moment in the hearts of winemakers. For at this time of year, the grapes are slowly approaching maturity. And so, in the past, people would turn to the Virgin Mary to ask for her protection. This was the tradition of the “blessing of the vines” – a simple custom, yet full of meaning.

An ancient and symbolic ritual

On that day, people would set out early into the vineyards. They would pick a few early grapes – just those that had already taken on their beautiful colours. These were placed in a wicker basket, sometimes decorated with olive or laurel branches. Then they would walk to the village church. There, the priest would bless the first fruits. This gesture symbolised the hope for a healthy and plentiful harvest. And above all, it expressed the winemakers’ respect for the land and for nature.

A celebration that brought people together

After the ceremony, everyone would return to the estate. A simple yet convivial meal was prepared. Neighbours, friends and family were often invited. And of course, a bottle from the previous vintage would be opened. It was enjoyed with emotion, as everyone wished for the next wine to be just as good – or even better. In this way, the 15 August in Provence became a moment of sharing, hope and joy.

Our 15 August at Domaine des Oullières

For us, this date has an extra meaning. Because the 15 August in Provence is also the feast day of Mireille. In Provençal, Mireille means Mary. And here, we have our very own Mireille: Mireille Collomb. She tends our vines every day with passion. She knows each row, each vine stock, each nuance of the vineyard. And so, on this day, we also raise a glass to her. We celebrate her dedication, her expertise, and her love for the estate.

Linking past and present

Of course, today the harvest is decided with the eye of the oenologist and precise analysis. But the spirit remains the same. For in mid-August, we know the harvest is near. We observe each bunch of grapes with the same attention as our elders once did. We think of their patience, and their respect for the natural rhythm of the vines. And in our own way, we continue this tradition, keeping this moment as a key milestone in the winegrowing year.

In Provence, the 15 August remains a date when the land, the vines and the people come together. And here, at Domaine des Oullières, we continue to celebrate it – in memory, with emotion, and in anticipation of a new vintage.
